Patriot: Steps For Recovery

Teaching The AA Steps For Recovery With The Bible Patriot students having been equipped for ministry and in the Word of God can easily teach the 12 steps directly from the Bible. Praise God. Some critics contend that the 12 steps have removed the acknowledgement of Holy God in their restoration and healing. But have you seen the Biblical references of each step? If you find yourself involved with a recovery program, please take note of God’s 12 steps.

STEP 1 - We admitted we were powerless over alcohol -- that our lives had become unmanageable. (Romans 7:18) For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwells no good thing: for the will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

STEP 2 - Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. (Philippians 2:13) You must work out your own salvation in fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you, inspiring both the will and the deed, for His own chosen purpose. I find not.

STEP 3 - Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. (Romans 12:1) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

STEP 4 - Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. (Lamentations 3:40) Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.

STEP 5 - Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. (James 5:16a) Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.

STEP 6 - Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. (James 4:10) Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

STEP 7 - Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings. (1 John 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

STEP 8 - Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. (Luke 6:31) And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

STEP 9 - Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. (Matthew 5:23-24) Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remember that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

STEP 10 - Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. (1 Corinthians 10:12) Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

STEP 11 - Sought though prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for the knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. (Colossians 3:16a) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;

STEP 12 - Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. (Galatians 6:1) Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
